Still Life

Over the holidays, my favorite lady Maddy and I got together to shoot some photos. I had the weird idea of freezing some flowers in a block of ice as an homage to winter. I decided to call the series “Still Life” because they are literally a frozen moment in the life of these flowers, and, I mean, I’m an art history nerd so I will always look for new ways to honor old concepts.

So here's the thing: I have been working on creating a new blog. It will still be Scarlett and Giselle, but I want to host it myself and have a lot more control over the design. The annoying part is that I don't really...know...how to do that. I'm not great at HTML and every time I think about learning it I somehow wander away from my computer...I don't know how it happens...I guess I didn't retain the passion I had for graphic design in my Neopets days. But anyways, I am figuring it out and hopefully will have a new site soon. I was going to save these photos for that, but I really love them and I want to share. So please enjoy and know that this is kind of the direction I want to go in! Yay!

My Work: Seeking Spaces

I shot this with my friend Annie a few weeks ago. After a very active period in October, I haven't felt like posting here. Really, I am thinking about ways I want to continue with Scarlett and Giselle, and I am thinking it is going to involve a lot less of my face. It's just that I enjoy taking photos of other people so much more than I enjoy modeling for them. I still love styling myself, getting all dressed up and feeling like a human being/goddess, but I don't feel like that is necessarily pushing me to my greatest potential. Hopefully in the new year I can evolve this space to really showcase what I can do. In the meantime, here is Annie sinking into the earth, trying to find her place like I am trying to find mine.

Inspiration: Cass Bird

Cass Bird is the coolest photographer in fashion, I think. As much as I love Tim Walker for his dreaminess and Peter Lindbergh for his mystery, sometimes I want someone who just understands women and how it actually feels to be a person on the earth. Cass Bird's photos are playful, but they make every action in them seem beautiful and important. You can feel the grass on your toes and the wind in your hair when you look at them. She also shoots the raddest people and her Instagram (x) is hilarious. She's been shooting a lot of films for Vogue (x) lately too and those are making me admit, most embarrassedly, that I think Kendall Jenner is at least a little charming maybe??? Anyways, I want to incorporate into my photography the spontaneity she has mastered.

Inspiration: Daria Werbowy for Equipment

Well, hello. I have a midterm tomorrow and I am attempting to study but alas I am getting distracted as usual. I came across these images by Daria Werbowy today.  She one of my favorite models and it appears she is a fantastic photographer as well. These were all shot for Equipment over the last few years. The photos of her are all self-portraits, and she uses a mirror in a way brilliant for a few that she shot of Kate Moss as well. These just feel like they have something to say and I want to take photos of myself and my friends in this kind of calm and rooted way.

Inspiration: Horst P. Horst

On the hunt for photography inspiration, I came upon the work of Horst P. Horst. I'd seen his images before, and if you open up any issue of Vogue you can see his legacy clearly influencing the artists of today. I was particularly drawn to his lingerie photographs, as well as the beautiful photo of Salvador Dali's costumes for Leonid Massine's ballet Bacchanale. I think another post will have to be made for those costumes--I love when artists design costumes or props and backdrops for the stage. It's like stepping into their worlds. But anyways, the work of Horst P. Horst stands out to me because it is both elegant and strange. I like the way he obscures and shadows his subjects. He presents fashion as surreal and exciting. Very very cool.

Anne Menke: See the World Beautiful

Back at school, I would go to the photography section at our library whenever I was bored. They had TWO Tim Walker books, and I won't start on my love for Tim Walker right now. But I also found this photobook by Anne Menke called See the World Beautiful which featured her work that led her around the world, photographing the people of each place in both high fashion clothing and their own pieces. Travel, culture, and fashion? WELL ISN'T THAT JUST EVERYTHING THAT IS GREAT. I wanted to share some of the photos with you:
